PRESIDENT’S  MESSAGE
As I start to serve my term as NETCA president I reflected on my 35 years  as a member of NETCA and the changes that have occurred.  When I join-ed in 1974, there  were many  buyers and  few sellers,  few train auctions, one major manufacturer, and few rarities showed up at the meets.   Major ways of getting toy trains were at TCA meets, the TCA interchange, ads in the newspaper and flea  markets.  Now in  2010, things have changed.  In my opinion, there are many more sellers than buyers, lots of toy train auc-tions, several manufacturers, and rarities are now available at major meets, auctions and  eBay.   Also, eBay has diminished  the traditional  ways of getting trains.   Over the last thirty-five years I have seen train prices rise, only to fall over the last five years, except for in-demand mint in the box items.  Some things have not changed, however.  I enjoy the many friends I  have met at TCA, still have a fever  for finding  trains for my  collection and learning more about toy trains.

Hope to see you on March 14th,    Fred

DIVISION  ELECTION
The division election has to be held again because the December ballot was drawn up incorrectly.   Please accept our apologies for that sloppiness.

The correct ballot for the NETCA election is enclosed.   Please take the time to vote.   The ballot may be mailed or may be brought to the March 14th  meet to be counted.   Instructions are included on the ballot.   While there is only one contested position, your vote is important nonetheless.   Thank you for your consideration and for your patience.

NETCA  COMMEMORATIVE  CAR

We know that you are interested in taking a peek under the tent to see what the upcoming division car  will be.   Just be patient a little while longer, till we have all of the necessary information.   In the meantime, there are a few of the 2009 cars remaining.   Here is the information:

The 2009 division car is a reefer decorated for Bay State Beer.  Both the O and S gauge cars feature diecast trucks and metal brakewheels.   There are 343 O gauge cars made by Lionel and painted by Weaver.   The 200 S gauge cars are made and decorated by Lionel.   Cost of each car is $50, plus $5 shipping, for a total of $55.  To view a photo of the car, visit www.netca.org

While the S gauge cars are sold out, there are some O gauge cars avail- able.   A few O cars will be available for purchase at the March 14th meet In addition, you can order cars by sending a check  payable to NETCA for $55 per car to:
William Halley   102 Atlantic Avenue    North Hampton, NH  03862

Ted Brahm will have a few of the 2008 division cars, the two-car Oilzum tanker set, for sale at the March 14th  meet.   The set cost is $105.

Thank you very much for your support for the division car program.

MARCH  RAFFLE
The March 14th raffle will continue the feature of having two grand prizes!  One of them will be Lionel set  #1050E from 1933, featuring a  #1651E loco labeled Lionel-Ives Lines, two #1690 coaches and a #1691  observa-tion labeled Ives R.R. Lines.   The set is a handsome maroon and brown with yellow window stripes; the set is in excellent condition.   In addition, the set captures a significant moment in toy train history.  The other grand prize will K-Line’s Circus Steam set #6-22121 which has the largest cir-cus engine K-Line has produced, a 4-6-2 Pacific.   Also, the set has the only circus caboose the company has made in its current circus line, two cars not available for separate sale, FasTrack and a CW80 transformer.
If the first grand prize winner is at the meet, he can pick which set he wants.  If not, the circus set will be awarded first, then the 1933 Lionel set.
Other prizes will include Lionel and MTH freights.   To enter the raffle, fill out the tickets on the enclosed sheet, cut them into separate tickets and either mail them to Ben Merry or give them to him at the meet.   All entr-ants are eligible to win the grand prize, but only those present at the meet can win the other prizes.   Thank you for your participation and good luck!

BOSTON METRO HI-RAILERS
On April 10th , the Boston Metro Hi-Railers will hold an open house from 10:00 to 4:00 at their club, located at 99 Essex Street, Melrose.   The open house is part of the club’s effort to put the model railroad hobby in front of the public.  The club has  two operating layouts  totaling more  than  2000 feet of  O gauge track.  Up to 12 sets of trains can be run at once.   A vol-untary donation of $2 is suggested, with children under ten years of age admitted free of charge.   For information, call Bob Freeman at  978-927-5717; e-mail bostonmetro@aol.com     To see photos of the club’s out-standing three-rail layout: www.bmhrc.com

MYSTIC VALLEY RAILWAY SOCIETY
The organization serves the railroad hobby in several ways.  It sponsors a large number of rail trips, both within New England and beyond.  As well, Mystic Valley hosts an outstanding model railroad show that pro- motes the hobby to the public.   To learn about the group and what it has to offer, visit www.mysticvalleyrs.org

MEET TABLE  PROGRAM
If you rent dealer tables at two of the three earlier 2010 division meets, you will be entitled to an equal number of  tables free of charge at the December  meet, with a maximum of two free tables.   If you would like tables in addition to the free ones that you are entitled to, you may rent them at the normal $25 rate.   Example: you want four tables in December.   You rented three dealer tables in March and three more in September.   You are entitled to two free tables due to the maximum rule and you can rent the additional two that you would like.
SEPTEMBER RAFFLE WINNERS
More than two months after winning one of the grand prizes at the De-cember 13th meet, Henry Dumas is still happy about it, for he took home the Lionel  253E passenger set, a handsome set in outstanding condition.
Don Smith feels like Henry, for he won the other grand prize, the Con-ventional Classics Thunderbird freight set, headed by a Lackawanna Trainmaster.   Henry Kandzerski can finish off a freight string with the caboose he won, while Bob Frink has to decide which locomotive he will put his new boxcar behind.   Carl Wiley has the same decision to make with his prize, a tank car.   Tom Galindo, Ron Coyne and Kevin Zene- wicz all won books on model railroading; the three were seen standing next to the bleachers, discussing the merits of one of the sections.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the raffle, which provides a lot of fun.   Fill out the enclosed tickets for the chance to get into the winners’ circle at the March 14th  meet.

TAKE  A  BOW
As you read the newsletter, take a moment to give a tip of the cap to the following members who fold, staple, label and stamp the newsletters.   In the process, they manage to lob a few insults at each other and take turns clearing jammed staplers.  Believe me, it is not as much fun as it sounds.   The crew returns, quarter after quarter, to perform this vital but thankless task:

Bob Frongillo       Jack Hibbard      Bill Easton       Wayne Orpin
Steve Modica     Andy Corbett     Joe Lino            Peter Der Sarkisian

KIDS  CLUB  COORDINATOR
The heading was easier to write than it is to say.   NETCA needs some- one with patience and a sense of humor to run the Kids Club, which is designed to introduce children to the model train hobby.   In the past, we have had a layout at our meets for the kids to operate.   It might be a good idea to organize an activity  for the children at other times as well.   One example would be to invite children to the home layout of the coordinator or anyone who would be willing to host the get-together.   If you feel that you would like to help with the Kids Club, contact Fred Cancilliere at
cancillierefm@cox.net

MEMBERS  GENEROSITY
I have enjoyed my association with TCA since 1983 and decided this was a good time to give something back.  At the December meet, I put out a collection box for members to contribute to the TCA's Third Annual Appeal.  As an incentive, I offered to match all  $5 contributions up to $250.

I am pleased to report that 66 people contributed $409.   57 members contributed $5 each,   5 members contributed $10 each, and 3 members contributed $20 each.  One guest contributed $2.   The $409 total slightly exceeds the $395 listed on the contribution sign up sheets, so I conclude that there were also some anonymous donors.  On behalf of the TCA, I thank you all.

While my original offer was to match up to $250, in the spirit of the large number of contributors, and perhaps the holiday season, and perhaps because I didn't spend any money on trains on Sunday, I am going to raise my contribution to $291 to bring the total to $700.   By the time you read this, a check for $700 will have been sent to TCA.

Below is a list of the contributors at the December meet, but it is important to remember that other members not listed here have also contributed directly to TCA, and they too should be acknowledged for their generosity.

Thanks to all of you,  Bill Pike
